Looking for an updated list of the top 5 college student credit cards of 2017?
You’re in the right place, as college students ourselves we’ve based this list off our own experiences and desires for the card. So what are the 5 things we are looking for in a student credit card?
- Easily obtainable, this card should be very easy to get with little to no credit history
- The credit limit can be easily raised if I make the monthly payments on time (this raises one’s credit score)
- Cashback (The higher the better, who doesn’t like a free rebate?)
- Similar benefits to higher tier credit cards (Such as: Price protection, extended warranty, etc…)
- A tempting introductory offer (such as 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers… even cash!)
Are we getting paid for the links on this page? No. There are no referral or sponsored links on this page.
Without further or due, let’s get onto our list: (Please note this may change as cards come out/ current card’s benefits/offers change)
Update May 26: You can no longer apply for this card
New #1: Vantage West Connect Rewards
What makes this card #1?: 5% cashback on the category of your choice + 3% cashback on gas, 2% on groceries, and 1% on everything else. Simple as that. This is one of the best cashback credit cards out there, therefore making it one of the best student credit cards out there. But, a nice cherry on top is the 0% apr for the first 6 months! (Note: Honestly their benefits are just mediocre, Discover’s offerings are better)
Please note you must meet at least 1 requirement to apply, but check out our post to find out how you can qualify for $15!
(Note) I don’t know the recommended credit score, but take a look at this data point spreadsheet to see if a data point comes in: http://bit.ly/2xbiOF5
What makes this card #2?: Your first year with this card you get x2 all the cashback you earned! That’s effectively 2% cashback on all purchases and 10% on purchases made in certain categories (given Discover’s time frame). Did I mention that includes the $50 you get for signing up under someone’s referral link? Yep, you get $100 in total for signing up under someones referral link! In addition, Discover offers amazing benefits for using their card (listed here), such as: Price Protection, Extended Warranty, and Purchase Protection. These benefits are normally only found on elite credit cards, but you can get those same benefits with Discover’s student credit card! There is also a solid 6 month introductory 0% APR offer on purchases. Did I mention you can also get a co-signer (such as your parent) to help you get approved?
No doubt if you’ve read our review of this card, you’re wondering how did this end up #2… Simply put it, many college students won’t end up spending $300 a month to make this better than the Better Balance Rewards in the long run.
Please note: A credit score above 550 is recommended for this card (unless you can find a co-signer)

#3: Chase Freedom
What makes this card #3?: It’s the harder to obtain Discover it Student with similar cashback (x5 on certain categories within Chase’s time frame and x1 on all other purchases). Unfortunately, Chase in general doesn’t give credit out as freely as the cards listed above, so even if you’re approved, it’s more difficult to get a credit limit increase. But, this card still has a nice introductory offer of: $150 cashback if you spend $500 within 90 days of the account opening + 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers. And of course, you get benefits similar to Discover’s student credit card which can be found here: Click Me!

What makes this card #4?: It comes with extremely nice benefits such as Price Rewind, Concierge, and Private Pass! On top of that you get x2 ThankYou points on dining/entertainment & x1 point on all other purchases (per dollar spent). So, as we can see it’s a good card with good benefits, but the cashback just isn’t as good as the previously listed cards.

#5 Discover It Secured Credit Card
What makes this card #5?: Looking for a student credit card? Everyone needs to start out somewhere. If you don’t have a credit history, this is your best option. You can earn up to 2% cashback (which is matched at the end of your first year with them) and there is no annual fee! They also do allow you to have a credit line up to $2,500 (this is equal to your security deposit). All in all a great credit card for students without any credit score.
