Have a non-existent credit history? You might be able to get this card!
Why? Capital One is a very lenient bank when it comes to issuing credit. Capital One’s Journey® Student Rewards Visa is also targeted toward college students, whom they know will have a very limited/non-existent credit history.
What does the card offer?:
- Earn 1% cash back on all your purchases. Pay on time to boost your cash back to a total of 1.25% for that month.
- No Foreign Transaction Fees When traveling or studying abroad, you won’t pay a transaction fee on purchases.
- Access a Higher Credit Line Get access to a higher credit line with Credit Steps after making your first 5 monthly payments on time.
Straight off the back I will tell you this is a great card. Not only do you have no annual fee, you also get cashback on all your purchases. While the cashback rate is not as high as Discover it® for Students, you get an easier access to raising your credit limit. Higher credit limit = it’s easier to raise your credit score, which in turn will help you get better cards such as the previously mentioned Discover it® for Students or Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card for College Students.
Please note, this is a Visa Platinum Card, so the benefits will not be as lucrative as Citibank or Discover’s complementary services. But, their are still benefits to owning Capital One’s Visa Platinum card such as: Extended Warranty (Maximum $10k per claim assuming you meet their requirements for service)

Final Thoughts: Capital One’s Journey® Student Rewards Visa is better than a secured card. That being said, this credit card’s benefits and cashback are not as abundant as other credit cards. Luckily, Capital One balances that out by making it easy to boost your credit limit, which in turn will boost your credit score. Therefore, if this is your first credit card, you’re setting yourself up for a bright credit future. Just make wise decisions because unlike a secured card, you can’t close this card and use your deposit to pay off your balance.
