Review of the Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card (2018)
The Chase Sapphire Preferred has recently had its introductory offer increased from 50k points to 60k (worth up to $750) points, should you still sign up for the card?
Right off the bat, I would like to mention that Chase has a 5/24 rule that prohibits certain people from obtaining their credit cards. If you wish to read about the full details of the rule, click “5/24” up above, but to summarize the rule: you can not have more than 4 credit cards opened in the past 24 months (if you wish to get this card). Once you hit 5 credit cards opened, you can not get this card.
Benefits:
- You can transfer your points 1:1 with certain airline and hotel partners of Chase. (Check the application page for an up to date list).
- No foreign transaction fees
- Standard Chase credit card benefits (Click me)
Cashback:
- Earn x2 points on travel and dining at restaurants – from airfare and hotels to fine dining and cafés.
- Earn x1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.
Note: Get 25% more value when you redeem for airfare, hotels, car rentals and cruises through Chase Ultimate Rewards
Annual Fee: $95
Introductory offer: 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. (Earn 5000 out of 60000 points by having an authorized user make a purchase on their credit card)
Is the card worth getting with the increased signup bonus?: Originally the offer was 50,000 points with no annual fee, that was worth up to $625. With the new offer of 60,000 points, you now must pay the annual fee, but you can get points worth up to $750. This is $125 in value for a $95 annual fee, which is $30 more than the previous offer. So yes, this introductory offer is better than the last.
Should you get the card?: Depends on your situation. The card is okay with decent cashback and benefits, but the Uber Visa (4 cents back on restaurants and 3 cents back on travel) is generally better than this card in the long run. So, if you wanted this card in the long run I would not recommend getting this card. If you just want an introductory offer worth up to $750, then yes this card is worth keeping for a year.
